Anticipated releases – September

I am always looking forward to check out what books will be released in the near fututre, so with this post I would like to let you share in my excitement and maybe inform you on what will be coming out. This will be a monthly thing, which I’ll always try to post on the last Friday of the month.

September looks like such an exciting month for book releases (as you can obviously tell by this long list of books that caught my eye). It’s also a difficult month for me as I can’t really buy any of these new releases. Well, technically I can, but let me explain. I signed up for a personalized, one time book box that is created by the host of the book club I go to. We got to fill in a whole list of questions including the genre, age range, themes you like and don’t like to read about, and of course also note down what books you already had on pre-order. I already had 5 of these September releases on pre-order, and now I can’t order any more because I might get them in the box at the end of the month. Sad right? (but not really, I’ll still have enough books to read)

Among Thieves by M.J. Kuhn – September 7th

When GoodReads gave me this tagline: “A thrilling fantasy debut—a high-stakes heist novel set in a gritty world of magic and malice, and perfect for fans of Six of Crows!”, I just knew immediately that I wanted to read Among Thieves. This is one of the books I would still like to pre-order, but I can’t because I first need to see what’s in the personalized book box. As the synopsis also mentions the main character being “the quickest, deadliest blade and the sharpest tongue” and “forced to team up with a crew of miscreants, smugglers and thieves”, I am sold. You can give me any quick-witted main character with a band of misfits that will no doubt become a found family when Six of Crows is mentioned. I’m in, I’m down, I’m sold and I’m sad I’ll have to wait until the end of September to get it.

The Last Legacy by Adrienne Young – September 7th

As I’ve only just finished, and really enjoyed, the Fable duology, I wanted to put The Last Legacy on my TBR as well, because this standalone takes place in the same world. The synopsis is still a bit vague, but it speaks of “holding power in the delicate architecture of the family”, “forbidden romance” and “a dirty business that got Bryn’s parents killed”. It sounds very mysterious and it has me intrigued.

The Hawthorne Legacy by Jennifer Lynn Barnes – September 7th

The Hawthorne Legacy was supposed to be en to The Inheritance Games duology, but it turns out it is now a trilogy. I’m expecting to see even more secret rooms in this giant mansion, and a captivating new mystery. I’m hoping it won’t suffer too much from second book syndrome as the original second book is now basically split in two. I don’t wan’t to spoil the first book by giving a synopsis for this, but you can read my review for the first book here.

Empire of the Vampire by Jay Kristoff – September 7th

I’ve read the Illuminae Files before and Aurora rising, but up until August, I hadn’t read anything that was solely written by Jay Kristoff. I dove into Nevernight this month and completely fell in love with the writing style, the plot, the characters and the personality he puts into these books. I’m hoping I’ll get all of this and even more in his new book Empire of the Vampire. As I hope this will be a vary dark and gruesome take on the creatures instead of the overly romanticized vampires we often see in books. I’m so happy that this will be the Illumicrate book for September, though I’ll probably still get the ebook on its release day because I don’t want to be spoiled.

Defy the Night by Brigid Kemmerer – September 14th

I have some controversial opinions on the Cursebreakers trilogy by Brigid Kemmerer (as in it being really slow, not much happening throughout and the characters just being very unremarkable). Nevertheless, I am going to give this author another go (mainly because I believe this book is going to be featured in a book subscription books I’m subscribed to).

Into the Dying light by Katy Rose Pool – September 21st

The Age of Darkness series by Katy Rose Pool is one of those hidden gems that completely blew me away. I plan on rereading the second book (As the Shadow Rises, review can be read here) in September because with me being in a non-English speaking country, it always takes a while for new releases to be delivered to me. I hope I will get it by the end of the month so I can read it in October. This series is multi-pov story about a prophecy, foretelling an Age of Darkness and a new prophet who can either save the world, or cause its destruction. These books have all been very high stakes, but still manages to focus on bringing the characters to life. I’m sure this finale, Into the Dying Light, will be spectacular.

Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao – September 21st

I’ve been wanting to get more into sci-fi, and book out in space intimidate me a bit as the world is always so vast and expansive. I’ve decided I’m going to dive into it again with Sanderson’s Skyward and Kristoff’s and Kaufman’s Aurora Rising in September and then read Iron Widow in October (because as usual, new release deliveries are freaking slow here). This is about Zetian, a pilot of transforming robots who is out for vengeance, whilst also trying to stop the misogynist way the piloting system works.

Lakesedge by Lyndall Clipstone – September 28th

The stunning cover of Lakesedge drew me in immediately, and the synopsis sounds interesting as well. With keywords as “gothic fantasy”, “cursed lake”, “secret gardens” and a “sinister death god” and a romance sub plot I’m excited to read this eerie, atmospheric and possibly also terrifying book. Early reviewers have been raving about this, and I hope I will be able to join them soon.

Beasts of Prey by Ayana Gray – September 28th

A City in which Magic no longer exists, a girl who is trying to pay of her parent’s debts and suddenly unleashes a power she did’t know she had… This already sounds epic. Beasts of Prey is a multiple-pov debut that supposedly has Pan-African influence and a magical jungle. I’m looking forward to be submerged in yet another culture and new myths so I can keep expanding my mind.

Dark Rise by C. S. Pacat – September 28th

I couldn’t tell from the cover, but apparently, Dark Rise will be an urban fantasy story as it takes place in London. The Stewards are the only ones who remember the ancient world of magic and the battles between Light and Dark. When Will gets introduced to the Stewards, he gets pulled into the oncoming battle against the Dark. they have to prevent the world from being destroyed by the Dark King’s return. I’m excited to read another urban fantasy, as I usually read most high fantasy, this could be an interesting palate cleanser.

Please do let me know what books you are excited to see released this month, and if you have any more adult fantasy recommendations, leave them down here!

Cheers!

Charlotte
